A major explosion and fire occurred at Qatar’s Ras Laffan Industrial City, one of the world’s largest liquefied natural gas (LNG) hubs, leaving 54 people injured and 18 others missing. The incident happened while workers were attempting to restart operations at a gas facility.

What happened at the Qatar gas facility?

The blast took place at the Barzan gas supply facility inside the Ras Laffan industrial complex. According to authorities, the explosion happened during the process of restarting operations that had been disrupted earlier. A large fire broke out after the blast, but emergency teams later brought the fire under control.

QatarEnergy described the incident as an operational/technical accident and said there was no ongoing threat to public safety. Officials have not yet confirmed the full extent of damage to the facility.

Casualties and rescue operations
54 people injured
18 people reported missing
Emergency and rescue teams are continuing search operations for the missing workers.

The explosion was powerful enough to be felt in areas far from Ras Laffan, including parts of Doha.

Why is Ras Laffan important?

Ras Laffan is the centre of Qatar’s LNG industry and is considered one of the world’s largest natural gas export locations.

The facility plays a major role in:

LNG production and exports
Supplying gas for Qatar’s electricity generation
Supporting industrial operations
Producing energy-related products such as ethane, condensate, LPG and sulphur

The site has an annual LNG production capacity of around 77 million metric tons, making any disruption important for global energy markets.

Connection with Middle East tensions

The explosion comes at a sensitive time for Qatar’s energy sector. Earlier disruptions linked to regional conflict had already affected parts of the Ras Laffan complex and reduced Qatar’s LNG export capacity.

The latest accident has raised concerns about possible effects on:

Global natural gas supplies
Energy prices
International LNG markets

However, officials have not confirmed major long-term damage to export operations yet.

Investigation underway

Authorities are investigating the exact cause of the explosion. Initial statements point toward a technical failure during restart operations, but a detailed investigation will determine what caused the blast and whether safety failures were involved.
