A tragic speedboat accident near Vietnam’s Phu Quoc Island has left several Indian families devastated, including households in Tamil Nadu’s Vellore and Tiruvannamalai districts. For some of these families, the tragedy is not only the loss of a loved one but also the loss of the person who provided their main source of financial support.
The accident occurred on Saturday, July 11, 2026, when a speedboat carrying Indian tourists overturned shortly after leaving Hon May Rut Ngoai Island, near the popular tourist destination of Phu Quoc in southern Vietnam. The vessel reportedly capsized less than half a kilometre from the shore while returning from an island excursion.
The boat was carrying 32 Indian tourists and four Vietnamese crew members. Fifteen Indian nationals lost their lives, while several passengers were rescued and taken to nearby hospitals. The victims included 10 people from Tamil Nadu, three from Andhra Pradesh and two from Kerala.
Many of the passengers were mobile-phone dealers and business associates connected with Lava International. They had travelled to Vietnam as part of a company-sponsored incentive trip. What was expected to be a memorable overseas holiday ended in tragedy within minutes.
Families Face Emotional and Financial Loss
The deaths have caused deep grief in Vellore and Tiruvannamalai, where affected families are struggling to accept the sudden loss of their loved ones. Some victims were reportedly the primary or only earning members of their households and had financial responsibilities that included supporting their spouses, children and elderly parents.
The tragedy has therefore created concerns about the families’ long-term financial security. Relatives are mourning not only the individuals they lost but also facing uncertainty about household expenses, children’s education and other future responsibilities.
Family members had reportedly remained in contact with some of the travellers during the Vietnam tour and had received photographs and updates from them. The sudden news of the accident turned their excitement into shock and grief.
Speedboat Overturned Within Minutes
According to preliminary accounts, the speedboat had travelled only a short distance when it suddenly overturned. Witnesses reported rough sea conditions and strong waves around the time of the accident.
Nearby boats, rescue teams, coast guard personnel and other emergency agencies rushed to assist the passengers. Some survivors were brought back to the shore and admitted to hospitals for treatment. However, the accident happened rapidly, leaving rescuers with limited time to save everyone.
The exact cause of the accident has not yet been officially established. Authorities are examining several possible factors, including rough weather, strong waves, the vessel’s operating conditions and compliance with maritime safety regulations.

Vietnamese authorities have launched an investigation into the accident. The speedboat’s captain has reportedly been detained as officials examine whether water-transport safety regulations were violated.

The Indian Embassy and consular officials in Vietnam are coordinating with local authorities to support the victims and their families. Efforts are underway to complete the required procedures and return the bodies of the deceased to India.
Government authorities in India are also working with diplomatic officials to assist affected families and help survivors return home. Lava International has expressed grief over the loss of members of its dealer network and stated that it is providing support to the affected individuals and their relatives.
