The Delhi High Court has ordered the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) to conduct a high-level inquiry into the collapse of a five-storey building housing a paying guest (PG) facility in Delhi’s Satya Niketan area. The collapse occurred on Sunday while repair work was reportedly being carried out, killing seven people and injuring several others.
A Division Bench comprising Chief Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya and Justice Tejas Karia took up a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) concerning the incident. The court described the tragedy as “most unfortunate” and said responsibility for such an incident could extend beyond the building owner to government and civic authorities.
What has the High Court ordered?
The court directed the MCD to conduct its inquiry at the highest executive level. The investigation is expected to examine whether the collapsed building had received all the necessary permissions and whether its construction complied with sanctioned plans and building regulations.
