Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has strongly rejected comments from U.S. President Donald Trump after he claimed she had asked him repeatedly for a photo during the recent G7 Summit 2026. Meloni responded publicly with the message: “Italy and I never beg”, calling Trump’s version of events completely fabricated.
Trump’s Photo Claim Sparks Controversy
The controversy began after Trump described his meeting with Meloni during the G7 gathering in France. In a television interview, Trump claimed that Meloni “begged” him for a picture and suggested she wanted the photo very badly.
The remarks quickly attracted attention because Meloni had previously been viewed as one of Trump’s closest political allies in Europe. Their relationship had been seen as cooperative, especially on issues involving nationalism, security, and international politics.
Meloni Fires Back: “Italy And I Never Beg”
Meloni rejected Trump’s statement in a video shared on social media. She said the comments were “totally invented” and expressed surprise that the U.S. president would speak about an ally in such a manner.
She added that she was disappointed Trump showed criticism toward allies while, in her view, showing less pressure toward opponents of Western countries. Her response ended with the line:
“Remember one thing: Italy and I never beg.”
Diplomatic Reaction From Italy
The comments created political backlash in Italy. Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani criticized Trump’s remarks and cancelled a planned visit to the United States, saying the statements were offensive toward both Meloni and Italy.
Other Italian officials also defended Meloni, arguing that the dispute could damage relations between Italy and the United States.
Trump-Meloni Relationship Under Pressure
The incident comes after signs that relations between Trump and Meloni had become more complicated. Although Meloni was once considered a strong Trump ally in Europe, disagreements over international issues have created distance between them.
The G7 meeting had appeared to show a return to cooperation, with both leaders seen speaking together. However, Trump’s later comments reopened tensions and created a public diplomatic dispute.
