A shocking discovery was made during a routine monsoon desilting operation conducted by HYDRAA in the Alwal area of Hyderabad on Wednesday. Workers engaged in clearing accumulated silt and garbage from the outlet drain of Mothukula Kunta in Machabollaram, located in Medchal-Malkajgiri district, uncovered a highly decomposed human body buried beneath layers of waste. The unexpected find immediately halted the cleaning operation and prompted a police investigation.
The body was recovered by HYDRAA’s Disaster Response Force (DRF) and Monsoon Emergency Response Teams while using an excavator to remove debris blocking the stormwater drain. Officials stated that the remains were in an advanced stage of decomposition, with only skeletal parts and a small amount of tissue remaining, making identification impossible at the scene. Police suspect the body had been lying in the drain for nearly two weeks before it was discovered.
After being alerted by HYDRAA personnel, the Alwal police reached the location, secured the area, and shifted the remains for a post-mortem examination. A forensic investigation has been initiated to determine the identity of the deceased, the exact cause of death, and whether the incident was accidental, suicidal, or the result of foul play. Authorities are also reviewing missing person reports from nearby areas to establish any possible connection.
The incident has highlighted the hidden dangers that sanitation and desilting workers often encounter while cleaning Hyderabad’s stormwater drainage network during the monsoon season. Although teams regularly recover large amounts of plastic waste, furniture, mattresses, and other discarded materials from drains, the discovery of human remains has raised serious concerns about public safety and urban monitoring.
Police have registered a case and are awaiting forensic and post-mortem reports to determine the circumstances surrounding the death. The investigation remains ongoing, and officials have appealed to the public to share any information regarding missing persons that could assist in identifying the deceased.
