India has sent an official delegation to Tehran to attend the state funeral of Iran’s late Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, underlining the long-standing diplomatic and civilizational relationship between the two countries. The visit comes as Iran begins a multi-day national mourning programme attended by political leaders and dignitaries from across the world.
The Indian delegation is led by Pabitra Margherita and Syed Ata Hasnain. They departed from New Delhi on Friday and are representing the Government of India at the funeral ceremonies in Tehran.
Besides the official delegation, several Indian political leaders have travelled separately after receiving invitations from Iranian authorities. These include Salman Khurshid, who is representing the Congress party, and Mehbooba Mufti, who described the invitation as a rare diplomatic honour.

are taking place at the Imam Khomeini Grand Mosalla, where international delegations are paying their final respects before a series of commemorative events and the burial in Mashhad.
