India’s metro rail network continues to expand rapidly, but Hyderabad Metro, once considered one of the country’s most successful urban transport projects, has seen its growth slow significantly. While cities such as Delhi, Bengaluru, Chennai, Pune, Nagpur, Ahmedabad, Kanpur, Agra, Kochi, and Indore are aggressively expanding their metro networks, Hyderabad has witnessed little progress in extending its existing corridors over the past few years.
Hyderabad Metro’s Slow Expansion
Hyderabad Metro began commercial operations in 2017 and currently operates around 69 kilometres across three major corridors. The network has transformed public transport in the city by reducing travel time and easing road congestion.
However, despite increasing passenger demand, no major extension has become operational after the completion of the initial phase. Several proposed routes, including the long-awaited Airport Metro Corridor connecting Raidurg to Rajiv Gandhi International Airport, remain under planning or approval stages.
Industry experts believe delays in financial approvals, land acquisition, and coordination between the state and central governments have slowed the pace of expansion.
Other Metro Cities Move Ahead
While Hyderabad waits for new projects, several Indian cities have made significant progress.
Delhi Metro
Delhi continues to maintain the country’s largest metro network. Multiple corridors under Phase IV are under construction, including extensions that will improve connectivity across Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR). New stations and routes are expected to open in phases over the next few years.
Bengaluru Metro
Bengaluru Metro has expanded rapidly with the launch of new stretches under Namma Metro Phase II. Work is also progressing on airport connectivity and additional corridors to serve the city’s growing population and IT hubs.
Chennai Metro
Chennai Metro Rail Limited is implementing one of India’s largest metro expansion programmes through Phase II, adding more than 100 kilometres of new lines connecting residential, industrial, and commercial areas.
Pune Metro
Pune has operationalised several new sections of its metro network and continues construction on additional corridors. The metro is expected to improve daily commuting and reduce traffic congestion in one of Maharashtra’s fastest-growing cities.
Nagpur Metro
Nagpur has emerged as one of India’s fastest-growing metro systems, with both operational corridors serving thousands of passengers daily. Further extensions are also under consideration.
Ahmedabad Metro
Ahmedabad Metro has expanded its operational routes, improving public transport connectivity between Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar while supporting urban growth in Gujarat.
Kanpur and Agra Metro
Both Kanpur and Agra have successfully launched metro services in recent years. Construction and expansion activities continue as authorities work to complete remaining phases.
Kochi Metro
Kochi Metro is extending services to new suburbs and integrating metro operations with water transport and feeder bus services, creating a more comprehensive public transport system.
Indore Metro
Indore Metro has entered the operational stage with trial and commercial services beginning on selected stretches, marking another milestone in India’s metro expansion.
